About Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists

Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists, formerly Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Surgery (CVRS), was founded in Annapolis in 1992 as a component of the Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center (CVRC), and opened a second location in Towson in 1998.

The medical staff of Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists is composed of nine staff surgeons, three surgical residents, surgical interns, Registered Veterinary Technicians, technician assistants, and ICU technicians. All of our staff surgeons are boarded or board-eligible by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists is associated with emergency care facilities that have 24 hour doctor care in our intensive care units at all of our locations: AAVEC in Annapolis and Pet+E.R. in Hunt Valley. Our two locations have doctors on premises 24 hours a day to ensure that all of our patients receive the highest quality care.

Collaboration with Referral Specialists

Our direct access to a multitude of other veterinary specialists in all three of our locations means that we are able to offer cross-specialty care for the most complex cases. Our practice is co-located within the Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center, a coalition of board-certified veterinary specialists in the disciplines of emergency medicine and critical care, surgery, canine rehabilitation, internal medicine, oncology, cardiology, eye care, neurology and advanced imaging.

Dr Moore and the surgical team tempered Rascal from his 2022 surgery. Everyone was so so kind. Dr Moore sat on the floor with us and discussed a team plan of care for Rascal that included Dr Moore, our regular vet and the new radiologist. CVSS is wonderful. Ten out of ten.

Dr. Prostredny and his staff are a Veterinary Dream Team of professionals. We were referred from our regular Vet and they did 4 surgical procedures at once to minimize the need to put our Bulldog "Tito" under anesthesia. Follow up was great and our dog is recovering nicely. Was sent this center when my 12+ years old dog started to show signs of increasing pain. All the staff were friendly and caring about my pet. They have extensive group of services under one roof; a PetER, neurologist. Orthopedic surgery and a couple of other services that luckily I didn't need to visit. They have a ability to do their own MRI, CT scans, labs, and surgical rooms. Hopefully you won't need their care, but it's good to know we have a great choice.

I absolutely love this place. I have been here a few times for emergencies. Luckily this time was a scheduled appointment for a surgical consult. However the experience was the same as it always is, efficient and professional while still being warm and caring. Most of the human hospitals I’ve been to could honestly take some notes. I am so thankful this place exists.

Now December 2024. My dog dislocated her right hip. Dr. Wolfe fixed it with a hobble and a hood.2010. My dog was born with an undulating patella (loose knee cap due to shallow groove allowing tendon over knee cap to pop out). Advice was to not do anything unless it got worse. It got worse. It popped out and could not be reseated. Her Vet recommended surgery at CVSS. After a 2 month wait, she was evaluated and could be operated on.Now July 2021. Dr. Anne Minivan was the surgeon. She explained what the problem was now and how she would fix it. She was helpful in her explanation. Lauren, Shaunti's technician and monitor, was friendly and said she would look after Shaunti. They have 24/7 staff so patients are monitored closely. The surgery was a success. Now comes the recovery and physical therapy. It is expensive. I was able to pay but others may not have ready cash so a payment plan would be helpful. If your pet needs special treatment, ask your vet to refer you to CVSS.

Dr. McClain and her staff are wonderful. A year ago my dog, Mickey, refused to go on walks and did very little due to pain; despite being on meds. Our vet recommended physical therapy. Thankfully we found this facility. Now Mickey looks forward to his short walks and doing his pt exercises at home, with treats of couse. I truly believe that they not only saved his life, but also increased the quality of his life. I am most grateful for their skill, personal attention and kindness.
