Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists, formerly Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Surgery (CVRS), was founded in Annapolis in 1992 as a component of the Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center (CVRC), and opened a second location in Towson in 1998. In the Fall of 2016, CVSS joined CVRC in opening a third location in Columbia.

The medical staff of Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists is composed of nine staff surgeons, three surgical residents, surgical interns, Registered Veterinary Technicians, technician assistants, and ICU technicians. All of our staff surgeons are boarded or board-eligible by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists is associated with emergency care facilities that have 24 hour doctor care in our intensive care units at all of our locations:  AAVEC in Annapolis and Pet+E.R. in Towson and Columbia.  Our three locations have doctors on premises 24 hours a day to ensure that all of our patients receive the highest quality care.

If you would like to learn more about our practice, see our surgical informational brochure or our pet rehabilitation brochure.

Collaboration with Referral Specialists

Our direct access to a multitude of other veterinary specialists in all three of our locations means that we are able to offer cross-specialty care for the most complex cases. Our practice is co-located within the Chesapeake Veterinary Referral Center, a coalition of board-certified veterinary specialists in the disciplines of emergency medicine and critical care, surgery, canine rehabilitation, internal medicine, oncology, cardiology, eye care, neurology and advanced imaging.

Dr. Prostredney is top notch and highly qualified! Our Frenchie was diagnosed with Laryengeal Collapse after having 2 previous airway surgeries by our local veterinary surgeon. We drove 4 hours to CVSS for a second opinion with Dr. P. He took his time and addressed all of our concerns during the consult. The next day our boy was taken into surgery and Dr. P determined he does NOT have laryengeal collapse but did need a revision of his soft palate and nares. We are 4 days out from surgery and our frenchie is breathing easy for the first time all thanks to Dr. P and the fabulous folks at CVSS!

The surgical department was so nice. They were great explaining the whole procedure to me so to all the anesthesia my dog would need administered. I have and older dog with a heart murmur issues who require special care. I had been searching for months to find a vet willing to operate to help him. Glad that they were able to assist and boom his surgery next week.

A few months ago I bought a puppy from a “breeder” a few days later we realized she has Parvo. For those of you who don’t know what Parvo is, do your research. It is extremely fatal towards most puppies but my baby got lucky. The doctors here were honest, trusting & extremely caring with my baby during that tough time. This was my first dog so I was freaking out not knowing the outcome. Here is Zara now. Thank you so much for saving my sweet girl. Words cannot explain how happy I am to have her still here with me. Here is Zara living her best life all thanks to you’ll 💗🥺(They were a little pricey but every penny was worth it)

Diagnosis seemed thorough and several options were presented for treatment. None of the non-invasive treatments resolved the problem, so surgery was performed. Although the outcome lies further down the road, I am fairly confident the results will be positive. Prior surgeries on my current pet and the one before him had the desired effect.Precise guidance was given for all the treatment options. All questions answered.

Dr. Wolfe was amazing! She really took her time showing us all the details of the images and explaining things. I didn’t feel rushed or like she was just pushing for things to be done that would increase our bill. The whole staff was very friendly and welcoming!

Walter my golden retriever recently injured his shoulder. We had an orthopedic consult with Dr Rich Burgess who then recommended a rehabilitation program with CVSS. Receptionist/ Technician Lisa & Jess have both been amazing and so very patient. Both Dr Burgess and Dr Leslie Wyant have been very detailed with Walter’s treatment plan and very helpful with my fur kid. We’ve received exercises, have been measured for a stabilization harness and he is receiving numerous treatments to help him to hopefully avoid surgery. Great people & Team.

Each person I dealt with at CVSS was kind and caring, especially Alex. Dr. Jey was compassionate and provided a thorough explanation during the surgical consult so that I could make an informed decision. I chose surgery and felt like I was leaving my dog in good hands.
