Derek Chiu, DVM

Surgical Resident

Dr. Chiu is a native of East Brunswick, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. During college he was a teaching assistant for sheep, goat and pig husbandry. After college, he was a veterinary technician for 1.5 years.

Dr. Chiu attended veterinary school at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in Basseterre, St. Kitts. He did his clinical rotation at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Upon graduating he returned to New Jersey to complete a year long rotating internship at Garden State Veterinary Specialists (GSVS). Dr. Chiu stayed on with GSVS for a year long surgical internship prior to joining Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists (CVSS). In 2021, Dr. Chiu joined CVSS and worked as a surgical intern for two years. Dr. Chiu began his three year surgical residency with CVSS in 2023.

During his free time, Dr. Chiu enjoys volleyball, snowboarding and eating.
